About Us
Dr. Daniel Clayton, DVM, is a Board-Certified Veterinary Dentist™ and Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College. He completed his residency in Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery at Veterinary Dental Services in Boxborough, MA.
Before committing to dentistry he worked as a small animal general practitioner for 12 years after completing an internship in small animal emergency and surgery at VCA South Shore in Weymouth, MA. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Clayton is a member of the Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association, and the Rhode Island Veterinary Medial Association. He received the 2019 Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry Grant for the research project: "Comparison of Cone Beam Computed Tomography, Digital Radiography and Oral Exam in the Identification of Feline Tooth Resorption with Histopathologic Analysis as the Gold Standard".
Dr. Clayton moved to Rhode Island in August of 2024 with his wife and 3 kids to establish a veterinary dental practice in Rhode Island. We are looking forward to getting to know our veterinary clients and their beloved pets as we work to grow our practice in the RI area.
Why See a Veterinary Dentist?
After completing a Veterinary Medicine Degree, Veterinary Dentists have completed a 3-year residency program under the guidance of a Diplomate to the Veterinary Dental College and are specialists in diagnosing and treating dental and oral issues.
When to Consider a Referral to a Veterinary Dentist:
Signs of Dental Problems: If you notice signs of dental problems, such as bad breath, broken or discolored teeth, changes in eating behavior, or pain in or around the mouth, consult with your veterinarian, who may refer you to a veterinary dentist.
Complex Dental Cases: For complex dental cases, such as broken teeth, jaw fractures, or oral tumors, your veterinarian may recommend a referral to a veterinary dentist.
Advanced Imaging or Procedures: If your veterinarian needs advanced imaging or procedures, such as dental x-rays, cone beam CT, or root canals, they may refer you to a veterinary dentist.
Seeing a veterinary dentist is crucial for your pet's overall health. Regular Dental care can help prevent systemic health problems:
Oral Health and Overall Health: Poor oral health can lead to systemic health problems, affecting the heart, liver, and kidneys.
Preventing Infections: Veterinary dentists can identify and treat dental infections early, preventing them from becoming systemic infections.
Maintaining a Healthy Mouth: Regular dental check-ups and cleanings can prevent the development of severe dental problems, contributing to a longer and healthier life for your pet.
Pain Relief and Improved Quality of Life:
Relieving Dental Pain: Dental issues can cause significant pain and discomfort affecting eating and chewing. By treating dental problems pets are able to chew and eat more comfortably.
Addressing Behavioral Changes: Dental pain can lead to behavioral changes, such as reduced appetite or aggression.
